Debt of Christ Jesus – Dn. Ayo Olorunleke

Introduction

Gratitude is the only right response to grace. When we truly understand what Christ has done, thanksgiving is no longer optional; it becomes a lifestyle.

The truth is simple but profound: we all started as debtors.
As written in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned…” and in Ephesians 2:1–5, we were once spiritually dead. Before Christ, we were not just struggling—we were spiritually bankrupt, unable to pay the debt of sin on our own.

The Reality of Our Debt

In Luke 7:41–43, Jesus tells the parable of two debtors: one owing much, the other little. Yet both were forgiven. The lesson is clear: forgiveness should produce gratitude, regardless of how “big” or “small” we think our sins were.

Key Truths About Gratitude

  1. Gratitude Begins with Remembrance

Gratitude is born when you consciously remember what you have been saved from.
A forgetful believer will always be an ungrateful believer.

  1. Gratitude is the Currency of the Kingdom

Thankfulness is not seasonal, it is foundational.
In God’s Kingdom, gratitude is how we respond to His continuous grace. It must go beyond moments and become a daily posture.

  1. Gratitude Replaces the Language of the Wilderness

1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances.
Complaints, murmuring, and negativity are the language of the wilderness, but gratitude shifts us into the atmosphere of faith and victory.

  1. We Repay Our Debt by Reflecting Grace

Though we cannot repay Christ for salvation, we respond by reflecting His grace in three key ways:

  • Through Worship – Honoring God with our hearts and expressions
  • Through Service – Living a life that blesses others
  • Through Testimonies – Publicly declaring what God has done

A Sobering Truth

If you have not thanked God for what you are already enjoying, you have no right to demand more.
Gratitude qualifies you for greater grace.

Understanding the Two Kinds of Debt

  • Worldly debt enslaves – It binds, burdens, and limits
  • The debt of Christ brings freedom – It liberates, restores, and gives life

When you embrace the debt of Christ, you are not oppressed, you are transformed.

Final Charge

Gratitude reminds us that many things we enjoy are not earned, they are given by grace.

God desires that we live with a constant awareness:
we owe Him a debt of gratitude.

Let your life be a continuous “thank you” to God not just in words, but in worship, service, and daily living.
